It has been said that “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The history of the war in Iraq is not complete without the stories of those who experienced it first-hand, and personal healing and reconciliation are not possible without an outlet for Iraqis affected to share their accounts of the conflict.
Generation Iraq seeks to collect, preserve, and make available the stories of Iraqi women and teenagers affected by the war. This allows present and future generations the opportunity to hear directly and better understand the realities of war, as well as a safe context in which Iraqis can express the emotions and circumstances of their experiences. Stories are told by personal narratives, writings, and artwork.
There is no political agenda behind this project, simply a desire to preserve the experiences and achieve some peace and reconciliation through personal expression.
The Oral History Project collects the stories of women and teenagers through video, audio recording, and the written word. In all instances, Iraqis collect the stories from each other, increasing comfort in open communication.
The Comfort Through Art initiative allows children suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder the opportunity to express their emotions in a creative manner. The structured art therapy framework allows youth the opportunity to achieve reconciliation and personal healing through creative expression.
Your donations to this project allow us to preserve the stories of Iraqis affected by war, and offer them a sense of peace that can be achieved through open communication. Donations go towards the purchase of video and audio recorders, training, and art supplies.
